Starting on Highway 30, turn toward the ocean at Kai Ala Drive

Happy Aloha Friday on Maui! The calmest water is in Ka’anapali, while the Northwest faces extremely dangerous ocean conditions, and the South Shore surf is up a bit.

Northwest: 1.0

Extremely dangerous ocean conditions with powerful waves, strong currents, and a relentless undertow. Some of the largest waves can appear after long lulls, sometimes 20 minutes or more, crashing high onshore and pulling everything back into the sea. While waves inside Kapalua Bay might seem smaller, conditions remain very hazardous. However, it is a beautiful day with light winds and sunshine.

Ka’anapali: 6.0

It’s an absolutely beautiful day at the beach, with light winds and sunshine expected throughout much of the day. Snorkeling looks best along the south face of Black Rock, though currents are stronger near and beyond the rock tip. Kahekili may still offer a decent option if we avoid any waves, but please stay aware as the surf is likely to pick up as the day goes on.

South Shore: 4.5

Light winds and sunshine make for a gorgeous day at the beach. While the surf isn’t huge, it has picked up and is affecting snorkeling at many spots. The smallest waves are around the south end of the Kamaole Beaches, with larger waves further south in Wailea and Makena. Stay aware, as conditions can fluctuate throughout the day, and there’s always a chance for improvements as well.
